Weekend Wrap-Up

laptop, wrapping paper, and ribbons

Here’s what happened in my life over the past week:

  • I continue to have a hole in my bathroom ceiling while waiting for my upstairs neighbour’s leaky shower to be fixed. Not sure what’s taking them so long. My boy guinea pigs are lovely, but they are a little on the stinky side to have in my bedroom. Girl piggoos are far less stinky than boys.
  • My appetite is finally improving, and I actually felt hungry at times this week.
  • It’s been a quiet week for me, both mentally and in terms of things happening. It’s been nice.
  • Do you ever have times when you discover you’ve been wrong for years about something you thought you knew? This week, I discovered I’ve been wrong forever on what I thought immaculate conception meant. I thought it referred to Mary getting preggers, not her being conceived.
  • There was a WordPress update about a week ago, and it’s broken some things. One of the things that was supposed to be good about this update is that you can select text from multiple blocks and make it italic, for example, at the same time… except that it isn’t working properly. That seems like the kind of thing that one would test before rolling it out.

Earlier this week, my friend Caz at Invisibly Me shared the link to a petition to review the revisions NICE (the organization which establishes clinical guidelines for the UK) made last year to the guidelines for chronic primary pain for which there is no clear cause. According to NICE, “People with chronic primary pain should not be started on commonly used drugs including paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, benzodiazepines or opioids.” If you live in the UK, you can sign the petition here.

This video shows Peanut while he’s dreaming. That’s his face on the right with his snout pointed towards the camera, and the white bit is his right eye. He has the most noticeable rapid eye movement sleep out of any of my piggies. Guinea pigs sleep with their eyes open, and the black part of Peanut’s eye tends to be oriented downward during REM sleep, so what’s visible is mostly the white part of his eye, making him look kind of possessed. Butternut flaps his ears a lot when he’s dreaming.

Here’s some colouring from this week.

  1. I’m glad that things are going well. They are going well on my end too. What do you mean about the immaculate conception? It is about the conception of Jesus. It was without sin, according to the bible. Guinea pigs looking lovely as usual and I love the coloring. You know that I support all the art related content

    1. Thank you! ❤️

Re. immaculate conception, that was what I thought. But Wikipedia says: “The Immaculate Conception is the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception.”

      1. Ah! If they say it but I understood that you said that it didn’t that Jesus’ conception was immaculate. And you meant not only that. My bad. Sorry. Hugs

  2. Glad you are starting to get some appetite.
Nothing much to say from me then my moods are like yo yo’s at the moment. But seem to be on better end again.
Off work since Thursday. I have mostly watched DVD’s since then. But I have done a little crafting as well as make a couple of fruit crumbles.

  3. I’m glad things have been quiet for you and that your appetite has returned. I’ve noticed that when I’m stressed my appetite goes away. I hope you have a great week and I do enjoy your weekend wrap-ups. <3

  4. I’m glad to hear your appetite has been picking up a bit. I’ve had a bit of a rough week with my depression creeping in and messing with my sleep. I guess it doesn’t help that I work nights. Great job on the coloring BTW!

  5. I’ve had a pretty good week, I’m having a great holiday in Colorado loving it here wish I could live here permanently

    1. Yeah lol. The hole was cut to see the pipes and stuff in the space between my ceiling and upstairs guy’s shower, but there isn’t a corresponding hole in upstairs guy’s floor, so he can’t spy on me peeing.

  6. Also didn’t know that about immaculate conception. Makes us upset that the belief exists that we’re born sinners. We don’t subscribe to that.

House will be full starting tonight: kids home from college.

    1. The Calvinist idea of “total depravity” certainly sounds rather depressing to me. Not sure why that would be a desirable way to look at humanity.

I hope the full house isn’t too overwhelming. ❤️

  7. I’m amazed that the girl guinea pigs smell better than the boy guinea pigs. Maybe I shouldn’t be since I’m a girl but do they have a better cleanliness routine?

So sorry about the hole in the ceiling. And I should look it up – but I though Mary’s immaculate conception was when she got pregnant with Jesus too. Is that not the case? Oh boy, that’s fascinating!

    1. Apparently “virgin birth” refers to Jesus and “immaculate conception” refers to Mary’s conception. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Guinea pigs have a grease gland that they use for marking their territory, and boys make stinkier grease than girls.

  8. Quite a few people are confused about the Mary thing. I used to think “immaculate conception” meant Jesus as in, conceived without sex. That it was referring to Mary being conceived without sin was a surprise to me too. I missed that bit in Sunday school.

It’s weird about the boy/girl smell thing – boy dog pee is better at not destroying lawns. Then again, boy teenagers reek.

It’s always cool watching pets in REM sleep. Nothing too remarkable about my week. A few more weeks left of tapering off my old meds and increasing the new ones. Interested to see the results.

  10. What a bummer about the ceiling and leakage. Hope they’ll get around to fixing it asap!
Piggoos are cute as always ♥
Glad you’re getting your appetite back and that you had a good week. Always nice when those come around. ☀ 🌻

  11. Both feeling hungry (as in reasonably hungry) and things being quiet mentally are nice feelings. I’m glad you’re getting your appetite back and are doing relatively well. 🙂
Hahahah funny that you thought so about the Immaculate Conception, but I can see how it could be easily mixed up and I suppose it’s confusing for many non-Catholics. These things are quite naturally strongly related though, because if Mary’s conception wasn’t immaculate, she wouldn’t be able to be a Mother of God, who is holy and immaculate in His nature.

    1. Thank you!

I knew that Catholics had particular beliefs about Mary, and I’ve heard of Catholic schools named Immaculate Conception, but I guess I never bothered to ask or look up what the connection was.

  12. Very pretty colouring page!! 🌺🌸🌼

I’m glad you’ve got a little appetite back. I hope it continues. Maybe it won’t with the smell of the guinea pigs though. I hope the neighbour’s issue is sorted soon. You’d think leaks and the potential for a floor to fall through or mould to grow would be a priority. Then again, I think the piggoos will be disappointed to not have your bedroom as their new lounge space for much longer.

Thank you very mutely for sharing the chronic pain petition for me, Ashley, it’s much appreciated 🙏

I’m confused on the immaculate conception thing now. I’d always thought it was Mary getting pregnant without any knocking boots (or insert a word from your previous words-for-sex post 😉). Thus Jesus was conceived purely, and bizarrely, with nothing to fertilise any egg. Are you saying that’s not it?

I’ve found the new WP update has messed things up, too. You can’t go across blocks highlighting text like you say. Also, it keeps taking away the featured image in the toolbar on the right so it just magically disappears.

    1. Apparently the “virgin birth” refers to the boot-knocking-free baby-making action, and immaculate conception is Mary being conceived without original sin, which prepared her ovaries to make non-sperm-requiring eggs. The virgin birth is a broader Christian belief, while immaculate conception is a Catholic thing that not all Christian denominations agree with. Who knew?

It’s weird to me that WP rolls out new updates with things that regular users can tell immediately are broken. I don’t know how they manage to not notice these things during testing.

      1. You know, the immaculate conception pertaining to Mary’s conception now rings a bell. I think maybe I had heard that’s what it was, but quickly forgot about it and stuck with my original incorrect understanding from when I was a kid. I’ll never get my head around the Christian vs Catholic belief differences. Thankfully, as someone who think the whole religious story is an immaculate conception out of thin air, it doesn’t really make any difference.

I think WP just likes to keep people on their toes. Once a new update comes out and it’s messing everyone up, bloggers suddenly start talking about WordPress, hitting the support forums and going on Twitter. It’s a backwards marketing ploy. Maybe.

        1. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what WP was going for.

The whole Christian denominations thing is weird to me. If they’re all talking about the same book but believing different things about it, isn’t that an indicator that the whole thing is, like you say, an immaculate conception our of thin air? 🤷🏻‍♀️

  13. Oh I love your latest colouring piece! I am happy for you that this has been a quieter week, and that your appetite has improved a bit, I hope it can continue to improve for you. 🙂
I love hearing about your guinea pigs. I hope you have a wonderful week Ashley <3
My weekend has been a good chance to try and rest, I played some animal crossing and watched some stranger things which was a nice break from reality. I am working on setting up my schedule and life a bit more on an app called notion- that has been quite fun honestly haha

    1. Thank you! Glad you had a restful weekend. ❤️

I hadn’t heard of Notion before. I mostly use Apple’s Notes app for organizing, with a bit of Google Calendar and Google Keep tossed in. There’s probably a more efficient way, but I tend to get pretty easily overwhelmed by organization apps.
