Happy Fourth of July

Happy Independence Day to my American friends!

While the country celebrates freedom, the asylum-seekers detained in horrible conditions on the southern border also deserve to be in our thoughts.

The Declaration of Independence states:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The New Colossus sonnet engraved on the Statue of Liberty reads:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

And a few points from the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights:

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

“No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

“Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.”

This is a day to celebrate freedom, but there is no true freedom without freedom for all.
