A good place to build up both your confidence and your writing portfolio is to submit personal stories or other guest posts to sites that don’t pay writers for stories.  This can be a stepping stone to moving on to writing for paid sites, and for me at least these sites felt a lot less intimidating to submit to than the sites that pay writers.  It also allows you to build up a portfolio of work that can become useful later on.
